NARAKASURAVADHAM | KATHAKALI
Kathakali, a classical Indian dance form hailing from the southwestern coast of Kerala, is a feast for the senses. With its elaborate makeup made from natural materials and a rich tradition dating back to the 17th century, this dance form tells stories through the art of recitation, singing, and percussion, with the performers acting out the tale through expressive, often silent movement.
The Kathakali depicted in these photographs is called Naraksuravadham, based on the Bhagavatam tale of the rise of the demon king Narakasura. When Narakasura's servant, the demoness Nakrathundi, is spurned by Indra's son Jayantha, she becomes mutilated in the ensuing confrontation. Infuriated, Narakasura seeks revenge by attacking heaven and dethroning Indra. It is only through the intervention of Krishna that Narakasura is finally defeated.
Experience the magic of Kathakali through these captivating images, and let yourself be swept away by the vibrant colours, intricate makeup, and timeless storytelling of this enduring dance form.
